EEG Headset Design

The EEG headset design project was initiated with the goal of transforming the way clinical tests related to epilepsy are conducted. To achieve this, unique mechanical solutions were developed to shift the nature of the device from a purely laboratory-based product to a home-use headset—an approach that significantly impacts the target market and enhances the product’s commercial potential.

Overview Projects

Designing a device intended to target specific areas of the human brain presents significant challenges due to the wide variation in head sizes and shapes, as well as the complexity of head ergonomics. To address these challenges, two independent motion mechanisms were implemented in the electrode design:
a vertical top-to-bottom movement and a horizontal left-to-right movement. These mechanisms ensure precise electrode placement on the intended target areas without causing damage to the hair or scalp. This personalized approach allows each user to adjust the headset according to their individual needs.
To ensure optimal comfort and softness in the frontal and posterior regions of the head, a combination of fabric, foam, and hook-and-loop fasteners was used instead of rigid materials. This configuration facilitates electrode adjustment across different head sizes. Additionally, to prevent excessive pressure on the patient’s head, the overall structure of the device was designed to be securely and comfortably fixed using zippers and dedicated mechanisms integrated into each rail, allowing proper fit for a wide range of users.
To address some of the most critical challenges in monitoring functional brain health and neurological disorders, our team collaborated with leading medical specialists from the University of Münster, Germany, to collect and analyze brain data. Furthermore, to manage the highly complex internal wiring system, the device was designed with two separate shells incorporating an organized wiring system. The cables are secured in place by integrated mounts within the shells, and when maintenance or electrode replacement is required, the shells can be easily opened via screws, providing full accessibility.
